Resilient and Victorious
Who We Are.
Resilient and Victorious United Women’s Football Club (RV United) was founded in 2011 under Grassroot Soccer, an international NGO that connects youth with life saving Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV prevention information using the language of sport. At the conclusion of SKILLZ Girl, Grassroot Soccer's girls-only after-school intervention, the young girls wanted to keep playing football but had no opportunity to do so. Seven girls encouraged the organisation to provide them with the opportunity to follow their passion and become footballers, and RV United was born. RV United was founded with the mission to inspire young women in Khayelitsha to become leaders in life and football, and to become a well-known and respected team in the South African Football Association (SAFA) and SASOL League.
Through football, leadership, and financial trainings, RV United supports the development of life skills that enable young women to make healthy choices. The club currently consists of three divisions, including Senior SASOL, Regional and Junior Development teams, with over 70 adolescent girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 35.
Senior SASOL Team: Competes in the SASOL league, the highest women’s league in South Africa, with a complementary focus on financial literacy, work placement, tutoring and mentoring the younger RV United teams.
Regional Team: Competes in the 2nd tier, Regional League, with a focus on football skill development, discipline, communication, teamwork, and leadership.
Junior Development Team: South Africa does not have a formal league for Juniors, so young players train and compete against boys, with a focus on education and staying in school.
RV United's success is thanks to a dedicated group of leaders and football fanatics from South Africa and the USA. The team is youth-led and operates democratically, ensuring that the voices of all players are heard.
